Tucked away inside what looks like a former headquater of some Chinese trading association, Sugar Granny Café is a perfect oasis in Chinatown for you to beat the killer afternoon heat, and great supper hangout place just to chill and relax. Its interior décor is an interesting mix of the old and the new. I mean, who would expect an LCD TV to be on the same wall with an old fashion wall phone? How about a scooter next to a gramophone?
Its menu serves a limited but innovative selection of mouth-watering finger food and delicious dessert options. The couple team owners might have come from HK or be big fans of their dramas/movies that there is a strong Cantonese cultural influence seen in the way dishes are named here. Some of these include 顛雞!起你骨!(De Bone Fried Chicken Wings). Cantonese-speaking folks would probably appreciate this more.
Battered mushrooms, something I would love to make at home for snacks. Making this however may be a bit tricky for someone who can't even cook his maggie mee well.
Memories were blur about this dessert that I had some time ago, except for the extra fine ice which set it apart from being just an ordinary all time favourite of mine.
The nostalgic setting here has no doubt added an extra flavour to the food. It's even so for folks who have spent a good part of their lives around these objects of the last century.
As Sugar Granny opens till pretty late, pop over to Bukit Pasoh the next time a certain dessert store on Mosque Street is closed.
