Hinoki

Hinoki

Hinoki is a recent Japanese addition to the F&B cluster of China Square Central. Jointly owned by chef Lawrence Chia, its menu features bento sets priced mostly in the $30 range. Steep it may sound at first, but to be fair, you do get what you pay for.

This fresh sashimi platter was just part of the deal. Along with the Sashimi Gozen ($28.8) my companion had, it also came with soba, tempura and a bowl of rice, promising to fill even the most famished diner.

Hinoki Sushi Gozen ($32) is one of the popular sets among diners and it's not difficult to figure why. For those who like variety, the set offers 19 pieces of nigiri-zushi and mentaiko maki and what you get is very much dependent on the day's catch and chef's discretion.

We were particularly pleased with Gindara Mentaiyaki. The readily melt-in-mouth cod fish was given a mighty flavour boost with the spicy fish roe that sat well on our palate.

On promotion was Salt-grilled Salmon Head at just $8.8.

Lucky I must be, our lunch was blessed with the warmest hospitality, thanks to my lunch kaki who previously worked for a food supplier and formed close ties with the many Japanese establishments around.

On the other hand, Class 95 is a good station, but not so when I want to enjoy a Japanese treat. Then again, it is personal.
