I have a soft spot for French cuisine. La Petite Cuisine and its likes which serve casual French fare are the names I swear by. In the past, to get to Serene Centre could mean hour-long bus ride followed by some 10 minutes of footwork. But not any more. With the recent opening of the 13 stations including Botanic Gardens along the Circle Line, a trip down to Serene Centre has become very much painless.
Ravioli of prawns and foie gras ($15.0)
The skin of the ravioli was made perfectly al dente. The lemon cream sauce infused with parsley was light and very tasty. Fillings in the raviolis were decent with substantial foie gras goodness, though I found it a little dry. As this dish only comes with three raviolis, if you have more people at the table, their Half a dozen escargots in croissant ($13) would make a better entrée choice.
Ham & cheese omelette ($10.5)
This was decent too, came with a bed of greens in an appetizing dressing.
Dory in basquaise sauce & rice ($12.5)
Dory filet was fresh and well marinated.
Sirloin steak w/ gratin potato ($16.5)
I asked for medium rare but my steak somehow turned out to be medium well done. Never mind the mishap, as I thoroughly enjoyed the delicious potato gratin in cream.
Fricassée of large scallops & baby spinach ($26.0)
I regretted ordering steak when the four plump and juicy scallops showed up at the table. The downside of the dish however was the spinach cream sauce that was too heavy for my dining partner who started to feel queasy halfway through. Needless to say, I was more than happy to help her in that.
There have been many raves about the service standard. To me, expection management is the key to a happy dining experience here. After all, this is a modest place for casual French fare. Anything more than that, you will have to pay the extra service charge elsewhere.
