Thanks to the third coffee movement that swept across the island, we now get to enjoy a cup of quality brew at a growing number of non-specialty coffee places. First there was A Curious Teepee, then Drips, and recently The Muffinry on Telok Ayer Street has joined the list.
Helming the brew counter were two young and affable baristas, Chris and Jimmy.
Previously relied on roasts from Papa Palheta, they have since moved on to come up with their own customized blend 'Malabar', a blend of three beans (origins: Brazil, Sumatra and Guatemala) with the help of Coffee Culture. The result was a bittersweet with an intense body. It wasn't exactly strong as I could recall, but it was the complexity of flavours that made this cup very much enjoyable.
Despite the excellent coffees, due attention should be given to their fresh baked muffins. Alongside the regular flavours for the sweet-tooth, the café also offers a range of innovative savoury muffins ($2.4 ea) and 'boozy' ones ($3 ea). Currently there are over 20 flavours but only about six varieties are available daily.
Try their best-seller Green Eggs & Ham ($2.4), a savoury concoction of avocado (the green eggs), ham and spring onions. The portion might be smaller than the ones in your neighbourhood bakery, but it was well textured and packed with ingredients.
There are also other goodies baked perfect for the festive season.
The café is rather cramped with limited seats, definitely not a venue for your class gathering. Take-away might be a better option.
