Shibaken @ Gallery Hotel

Located in a quiet corner at the 2nd floor of Gallery Hotel is Shibaken, a Japanese-French restaurant.

The name Shibaken came from the chef's name Shibata Kenichi.

There are counter seats which resembles that of a Japanese teppanyaki bar, but of course there are the proper tables and chairs seats at another corner of the restaurant.

Was intrigued by this golden starfruit on the table.

Appetizers platter - some notable ones are the Alaskan Crab (bottom right), Horse Mackeral Sushi with Vegetarian Caviar (bottom left) and pasta with caviar (top right). The crab was very sweet, and made into a foie gras item.

Soup

Bread and olive oil, wich was served in a heart shape bowl. Pity the bread was not warm.

Photobucket

hamburger steak in a robust Chausseur sauce - the hamburger is made more juicer as lumps of foie gras is mashed together with the patty.

Photobucket

Braised Beef Cheeks on Mash - very tender braised beef cheeks. The brussel sprouts was surprisingly sweet and crunchy.

the chewey little cubes of flower and fruit infused sponge dessert were quite innovative, but I find the sherbets qutie sour.

Find the lady manager very nice, but quite sad to hear recently that she had resigned.

Por Kee Eating House @ Seng Poh Lane

Por Kee Eating House is a popular budget Chinese restaurant situated in the open car-park area of Seng Poh Lane which is next to Tiong Bahru Food Centre and Market.

The restaurant started selling Chinese tze-char dishes since the 1990s, and the food is so good that even former Indonesian President Megawati visited the restaurant which she was in Singapore (even though the food here is not halal)!

This is Por Kee's famous dish - Home Made Bean Curd With Beans and Mushrooms - The Tofu is home made, and they added some egg white and soya milk before steaming it. Very delicious, and the sauce goes well with white rice.

Photobucket

Steam bamboo clams with garlic - simple sweet savoury dish. But thin the chef was too excited over the minced garlic as there is too much.

Photobucket

Steam fish thai style - the steam fish is served in a metal plate. the waitress will then pour the spicy thai soup over the fish. the fire below is really strong, which allowed the soup to keep boiling. Fish is fresh and sweet. Highly recommended, but is quite spicy.

Mango pudding dessert.

Teochew yam paste dessert - Pretty good. Think they added some onion oil into the yam, making it both sweet and fragrant.
