One of the many advantages of having a shift job is that I get to enjoy all sorts of weekday dining promotions. My colleagues with me today can't agree more.
With the current DBS credit card 50% discount on high tea dim sum ending this weekend, the choice was clear where to spend our common off day.
What is traditional Cantonese Dim Sum without Har Gao ($4.10) and Siew Mai ($4.10)? All starved and tired from night shift the day before, we wasted no time ordering the first wave of dim sum cages which quickly formed an expanding sea on my table.
豉油虾米炒腸粉 $5.00
One of the dishes that I liked was Fried Rice Rolls with Shrimps. Lightly stir-fried with light oyster sauce, leaving a crispy surface with succulent chee cheung fun underneath. The addition of beansprouts and spring onion brought out the flavour indeed. Hmmm.... Yummy.
叉燒腸粉 $4.50
As compared to the fried rice rolls, this steamed one was a little disappointing as its skin was too thick to taste the charsiew goodness inside.
京川蒸餃子 $3.50
This dish was recommended by the manager on duty. Though called a dumpling, it tasted more like a wanton, if not for the vinegar sauce which coaxed out the piquant taste of garlic chives. How I wished the chef had not added the ginger bits.
煙鴨胸肉 $8.00
After satisfying our taste buds with all the must-haves, it was time to go for something a little more exotic. Terderised duck meat slices with a lingering smoky taste, what more could I ask for?
香滑流沙包 $3.20
This was indeed the star of the meal. Instead of the usual boring custard filling, this normal-looking babe had been stuffed with tasty fragrant salted egg yolk paste ready to burst out the moment I opened it. Even a non-bun fan like me succumbed to temptation.
楊枝甘露 $4.50
One of the desserts that originated from Hong Kong and gained popularity in the recent years, Yang Zhi Gan Lu is also known as 'chilled mango juice mixed with pomelo shreds and sago'. With a latent long-time mango craving, this dessert could not have appeared at a better time.
The bill came to be $91.68, which was split among 6. This amounted to around $15.20 per head. With the quantity and quality of food, I must say it was a fairly good deal. I'll tell you if I'd come back again without any decent promotion though, after my trip to Dim Joy.
