Old Airport Road Food Centre

On the first day of this new year, I finally paid a visit to Old Airport Road Food Centre, a trusty old haunt of many hawker-food fans, with my family.

We only woke up at 11am, so this meal served as our breakfast and lunch. We would have been starving if we didn't indulge in durians at 1.30am that morning haha.

Chee Cheong Fun with Prawn/Char Siew ($2 each)

Only prepared when you place your order, this slippery smooth, freshly-made Chee Cheong Fun is definitely in a different class from the ready-made ones sold at most places. I especially liked the contrast between the succulent prawns and the soft rice roll.

8am to 10pm daily

Fish Ball Noodles (Mee Tai Mak, no chilli, with ketchup) ($3)
Ordered this after spotting the newspaper articles plastered across the shop front. The fish balls were bouncy enough and the soup redolent of the sweetness of the fishballs. However, while decent, I felt that this dish was not outstanding. In addition, the food portion was a tad small.

6.30am-8pm daily

Kway Chap ($11 for a two-person serving with two additional bowls of rice noodles at $0.30 each)

I have heard that this stall, originating from the popular stall from Blanco Court, is well-liked. Indeed, there was a long queue in front of the stall. But, I soon realized that the queue consisted of people who were waiting for their orders to be taken- i.e., the stallholders were probably holding up its customers so as to lengthen the queue so as to make it seem more popular!
Disappointingly, I found the kway chap to be only average and a bit bland for my liking. I prefer the duck rice cum kway chap stall at the food court near my home, which has bouncier rice noodles and a salty but flavorful soup.

Closed on Mondays

Ah Bailing with Almond Cream ($2.50, includes 3 glutinous rice balls)
Ordered this after seeing that this dessert stall was also featured in the papers. The almond cream was smooth, and the soft glutinous rice ball encased a creamy peanut filling (yum!). Decent, but not a must-try.

I have saved the best for the last!

Lor Mee ($4)

My brother was slurping this up with so much relish, I practically had to drag it away from him. All it took was one spoonful of the seriously addictive, crabmeat-topped gravy for me to be hooked as well. Accompanied by fried snapper fish chunks, a stewed egg and braised pork, this slurp-worthy Lor Mee is worth every second spent in the snaking queue. I'll be having this again!
