Located on the third floor of Parco Marina Bay, Nantsuttei is the latest addition to the ramen scene in Singapore. Tucked away in a corner of this 3-storeyed Japanese departmental store, other restaurants sharing the space include Ma Maison's third local outfit and Tavolo which is the only one offers non-Japanese cuisine in the neighbourhood.
I was there on a weekday evening after a walk to the double helix bridge a soccer field away. While some of restaurants were still having vacant tables to fill, a short queue was already forming outside Nantsuttei which was a promising sign for good food.
There are about 12 counter seats and 20 other table seats. Well, not too small, but not as spacious as big players like Tampopo and Ippudo.
丸特ねぎちゃーしゅうめん - $17.00
Some may find the ramen here doesn't look appealing at first - black is probably the best way to put it -. It is actually quite harmless after you taste it.
Marutoku Ramen is Nantsuttei's bestselling ramen. It comes with a hearty topping of spring onions and three slices of thick chashu. The noodles weren't as springy as I expected, but the broth on the other hand was less salty and oily than it appeared.
But you know, first impression is important, at least to me.
ゴールデンカリーらーめん - $15.00
Nantsuttei's basic ramen topped with curry flavoured minced meat. The flavour of the curry shared some resemblance with a curry dish that I had some time ago.
夫婦円満餃子 - $6.00
Based on my limited understanding in Japanese, it means a gyoza dish that would bliss and harmony to a married couple (after eating this).
Succulent and toothsome fillings wrapped up in thin gyoza skin, which burst into a full spectrum of flavours. It was definitely one of the best gyoza dishes I ever had.
I was a little disappointed that they didn't have daikon (braised radish) on the menu.
Drank up my soup and saw this. Puuuu~~~.
What I like about Nantsuttei other than the savoury gyoza, is probably the cartoonized character of their founder which can be easily spotted on the menu and the walls. It was really entertaining reading the menu while waiting for my food to arrive.
Should you like new taste or be in the search for the best ramen in town, give Nantsuttei a try today.
