Drips

Didn't I just mention recently that there have been many quaint cafés and shops popping up in the Tiong Bahru Estate lately? If you have yet to check them out, here is one more to add to your itinerary.

Located just a stone throw away from The Orange Thimble, this new kid on the block is the brainchild of Alfred Chan, of Fredo Galaxy, a heartland bakery in the Commonwealth area. Although the main attraction here is their pastries, they also serve sandwiches, quiches and other light bites, so need not worry if you come with an empty stomach.

Blackforest Ham & Eggplant Sandwich - $9.80

Blackforest Ham & Eggplant Sandwich ($9.80), with the option of whole grain and croissant. My croissant was served warm and appropriately flaky, with a pleasant buttery flavour.

Veggie & Chicken Pie - $5.80

Veggie & Chicken Pie ($5.80), a simple yet comforting pie packed with hearty fillings.

Latte - $4.50

The coffees here deserve much attention too. Pulling away at a separate counter, the barista here delivered quite a balanced cup of Latte ($4.50).

Tiramisu - $6.80

Friend ordered a slice of Tiramisu ($6.80). Suitably moist and creamy, and not too sweet. It would be perfect if there was more rum in it.

Macadamia Nut Tart - $5.80

Over at the kitchen window

Pastries are baked fresh daily, so to skip the wait, 1pm is a safe timing to arrive. But if you have to time to spare, be here a little early and you may catch some actions at the kitchen as they whip out their freshly baked of the day. It is all but fascinating stuff to watch. Well, at least true for someone like me whose greatest achievement by far is brownie baking using mix.

After much waiting in anticipation, it was time to claim the prize.

Mixed Berry Tart - $6.00

Mixed Berry Tart ($6.00)

Mango Tart - $5.50

Mango Tart ($5.50) was the apparent crowd pleaser here. Topped with a huge pile of delicious mango cubes, the shortcrust tart base was buttery and firm, with a bed of smooth custard. Thyme leaves added some interesting spiciness to it. If this is what you are here for, have your fingers crossed before you step in, as they get wiped out pretty quickly.

Let there be light

I particularly appreciated how they make use of natural lighting here. Now talk about being photography-friendly.

花好月圆

I also liked this cushion on the couch.

The Orange Thimble and Drips are breeds apart and each has its own merits, it's kinda hard to tell which one I prefer. But if you have a plan to please someone with a sweet treat, Drips will probably offer you a higher success rate. And besides, unlike most of the small cafés, business is as usual every Monday. So you know where to go to next time you have Monday blues.
